How You Can Measure Windows for Custom Blinds
Ordering custom blinds is pretty straightforward as long as you get your measurements right. Even a few millimeters off can lead to gaps that let in light or blinds that don’t fit at all. Follow this guide:
1. Gather Your Tools
- A good steel tape measure
- A pencil and notepad (or use your phone for notes)
- A step ladder for tall windows
Make sure to measure in millimetres (mm). It’s more accurate. Always measure twice and only write it down once.
2. Choosing the Mount Type
Blinds typically mount in one of two ways:
- Inside/Reveal Mount: The blind sits within the window frame, so ensure the recess is deep enough for the headrail or cassette.
- Outside/Face Mount: The blind is mounted on the wall or architrave, overlapping the opening.
3. Measuring for an Inside (Reveal) Mount
Width
- Measure the inside width at the top, middle, and bottom.
- Record the smallest measurement.
Drop (Height)
- Measure the height on the left, center, and right.
- Record the tallest measurement.
Depth Check
- Measure from the front to the back of the recess.
- Check the product specs to ensure enough room for brackets and the rolled-up blind.
Tip: Don’t estimate for clearance—the manufacturer will do that. Just give them the tight inside sizes.
4. Measuring for an Outside (Face) Mount
Width
- Decide on the overhang (usually 30–50 mm per side).
- Measure the window opening and add your overhang.
Drop (Height)
- Measure from the top of the architrave (or bracket position) to the sill or desired end point.
- If no sill, extend a little below the frame for full coverage.
Tip: Watch out for obstacles like window winders, door handles, and light switches.
5. Special Shapes
- Sliding doors: Measure the full glass width plus overlap and total height.
- Bay or corner windows: Measure each section individually and note angles—consider hiring a pro.
- Arched/triangular windows: Create a cardboard template and measure key width/height points.
6. Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Don’t use old cloth tape—it can stretch and distort measurements.
- Stick to millimetres (mm) only.
- Always double-check depth for roller mechanisms.
- Never assume frames are square—measure in three spots.
- Account for potential obstacles near the window.
7. Double-Check Before Ordering
- Compare your notes with product size limits.
- Label each window clearly (e.g., “Kitchen left”, “Bedroom 2”).
- Snap a photo of each window with a sticky note showing its measurements.
8. If You’re Unsure, Ask
